How Predatory Towing Works in the GTA — And How to Stop It

Predatory towing is a real problem in the Greater Toronto Area. Here's how it works and how to protect yourself.

How "Chaser" Tow Trucks Operate

Chaser tow trucks monitor police radio scanners. When an accident or breakdown call goes out, they race to the scene — sometimes arriving before police. Their goal is to get your signature on a towing authorization form before you've had time to think or call your own company.

Once you sign, your car can legally be taken wherever they choose — often to a high-fee storage compound where you'll pay hundreds per day to retrieve it.

The Pressure Tactics to Watch For

  • "You need to decide now or your car is a hazard"
  • "Police said you have to use us"
  • "Insurance is paying, it doesn't matter"
  • Arriving and starting to hook up your car before asking
  • Offering a very low tow rate — while hiding massive storage fees
  • What to Say When an Uninvited Tow Truck Shows Up

Say clearly and calmly: "I did not call you. I am calling my own tow company. Please leave my vehicle."

You do not need to be rude, but you do need to be clear. Under Ontario law, no tow truck can touch your vehicle without your consent.

Protective Steps to Take Now (Before You Need a Tow)

    1. Save a trusted tow company's number today. Program 647-673-9755 into your phone right now.

    2. Know your insurance roadside number. Many plans include free or discounted towing.

    3. Check your CAA membership. If you have CAA, they have a vetted tow network.

    4. Don't sign anything at the scene until you've spoken to your insurance company.

    If You've Already Been Victimized

If you feel you were charged unfairly, file a complaint with:

  • The Ontario Ministry of Transportation (towing regulation body)
  • The Better Business Bureau
  • Your local Peel Regional Police non-emergency line

  • Pixel Towing is a licensed, transparent operator. We never chase accidents. Call us at 647-673-9755 and we'll come to you.
