"We'll Waive Your Deductible" — What Does That Actually Mean?

If you've driven through Brampton or Mississauga after an accident, you've probably seen collision shops advertising deductible waivers. It sounds too good to be true. Here's a straight explanation of how it works, what the rules are in Ontario, and what to watch for.

How Deductible Assistance Programs Work

When a collision shop has high repair volume and established relationships with insurance adjusters, there is sometimes room within the repair estimate to absorb the deductible cost — either partially or fully — through adjustments in labour rates, parts sourcing, or administrative fees.

This is not the same as billing insurance for work that wasn't done. Legitimate deductible assistance programs operate within the actual scope of the claim and are disclosed in the repair documentation.

Is It Legal in Ontario?

This is where it gets nuanced. Ontario insurance regulations are clear that insurers cannot be defrauded. However, a shop choosing to absorb or reduce the client-paid deductible from their own margin — rather than billing the insurer for it — is a business decision, not fraud.

The legality depends entirely on how it's structured:

Legal: The shop reduces their labour or administrative cost and passes the saving to the client as deductible assistance, without inflating the claim to insurance.

Not legal: The shop inflates the claim to insurance to cover the deductible — essentially billing insurance for the deductible amount by padding the repair estimate.

Reputable shops with established insurer relationships use the first method. It's a competitive tool to attract clients who bring their business to them rather than the insurer's preferred facility.

What Questions to Ask Before Agreeing

  • "How is the deductible waiver structured — does it affect what's billed to insurance?"
  • "Is this disclosed in the repair authorization paperwork?"
  • "Does this change my insurance claim in any way?"
  • A trustworthy shop will answer these clearly. If the answer is vague or they avoid the question, walk away.

    Our Deductible Assistance Program

We offer deductible assistance on qualifying claims at our Brampton bodyshop. Our program operates within the bounds of the actual repair — we absorb the deductible from our side, not by inflating the insurance claim. Not every claim qualifies, and we'll tell you upfront whether yours does when you call.

Eligibility depends on your insurer, the type of claim, and the repair scope. For most standard collision claims where the driver brings their vehicle to us directly, there is a strong likelihood of at least partial deductible assistance.

    The Bottom Line

Deductible assistance is real, it's offered by reputable shops, and in many cases it is fully legitimate. The key is transparency — you should understand exactly how it works before you sign anything, and your shop should be comfortable explaining it clearly.
