Dead Battery vs Bad Alternator — How to Tell

When your car won't start or dies while driving, it's almost always one of two culprits: the battery or the alternator. Getting the diagnosis wrong means buying a new battery when you actually need an alternator (or vice versa).

Signs of a Dead Battery

  • Car cranks slowly and won't start (especially after sitting overnight)
  • Lights dim before the engine dies
  • Battery warning light came on before failure
  • Car jumps and runs fine — then dies again hours later if the alternator is also failing
  • Battery is 3–5 years old or older
  • The test: Jump-start the car. If it starts and runs fine for hours/days, it's likely the battery.

    Signs of a Bad Alternator

  • Car starts, then dies while driving (alternator can't recharge the battery)
  • Electrical gremlins: flickering lights, radio cutting out, weird dash warnings
  • Burning smell (rubber belt or electrical)
  • Car starts after a jump but dies again within minutes
  • Battery light comes on while driving, not just at startup
  • The test: After a jump-start, drive for 10 minutes. If the car dies again, it's almost certainly the alternator.

    The Chicken-and-Egg Problem

A failing alternator will destroy an otherwise healthy battery over weeks. A heavily discharged battery can make a perfectly good alternator seem like it's failing. If your car has had multiple battery issues in the past 12 months, always have the alternator tested before replacing the battery again.

When to Call for a Battery Boost vs a Tow

  • Dead battery (car was fine yesterday): Call for a battery boost — 647-673-9755
  • Car won't start after a recent battery replacement: Likely alternator — call for a tow to a mechanic
  • Car died while driving: Almost certainly alternator or deeper electrical issue — call for a flatbed tow
